October Birthstones and Autumn Essentials

October is a month that is lucky to have two birthstones. Both of these birthstone are the perfect fit for the month of October. The changing hues and number of colours found in both gemstones can be linked perfectly to the change of the autumn season. Our winter haze collection was inspired by similar colours of autumn.

Opal: This gemstone is believed to have originated from India. Opals tend to be valued and loved on their colour shifting rainbow hues. Writers have compared this unique gems play-of-colour to galaxies, fireworks and volcanoes.
Ancient Greeks fantasised that this gem gave the gift of prophesy, it was also once believed that opal fell from the sky during thunderstorms and trapped inside was lightening. It is seen as a symbol of hope, truth and purity. Fire opal is also equally as beautiful, known for its reddish orange colour with similar scintillating orange and red flecks.
Opal is a beautiful stone to have as a birthstone if you are lucky enough to have been born in October.
With the changing colours of the stunning opal, this makes us think of the change of season, time for winter coats, leaves start to fall and the Christmas count down begins. Here are some of our favourite fall items!

Tourmaline: Tourmaline is the more recent edition as a birthstone for October, it is also the gem generally given to celebrate the eighth wedding anniversary. Its originally name translates as ‘stone with mixed colours’, due to the multiple colours that can feature in one single gem. Among some of the most popular tourmalines are the pink and red rubellites and the green and blue-violet Paraiba tourmalines. Like spinel, tourmaline has been mistaken for other gems throughout history, for example one of the “rubies” in the Russian crown jewels is actually a rubellite tourmaline.
The different colours of this gemstone are each believed to have their own powers. Black tourmaline is thought to give a feeling of self-confidence and protect the wearer. Pink tourmaline is the essence of love, compassion and gentleness. Green tourmaline is linked to stamina, strength and courage. Which colour tourmaline do you think best represents you?
Due to the array of colours tourmaline can come in, this reminds us of all the colours of Autumn. The mixtures of greens, oranges, yellows and browns, not to mention when snow falls and a white dusting layers the ground. These are more must have products for the autumn and winter seasons!
