The most common colour of a sapphire stone is blue, however surprisingly they can be found naturally in yellow, purple, green and clear. The sapphire is made from the mineral corundum, and is most often found in Australia, Cambodia, Montana (USA), Tanzania and Thailand.

The most famous association of the sapphire is that it is the birthstone for September, but it is also the zodiac stone for Taurus, said to protect and cure them of mental illness.

Sapphires are a symbol of truth, sincerity, faithfulness in relationships and are said to bring peace, joy and wisdom to the wearer.

The most famous wearer of the sapphire stone is Princess Diana, who wore a sapphire engagement ring given to her by Prince Charles in 1981. The ring which has a 12 carat sapphire stone allegedly mined in Sri Lanka, is now worn by Kate Middleton, after she was given the ring by Prince William as a mark of their engagement in 2011.

Another famous sapphire is the ‘Star of India’ which is the largest sapphire in the world boasting 563 carats, which can currently be found in the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
